St Ives Society of Artists

A stone’s throw from the beautiful harbour of St Ives, the Mariners has been owned by the St Ives Society of Artists since 1945. Once the Mariners Church, it is now home to two galleries, the Mariners and the Crypt. This iconic building is surrounded by fishermen’s cottages and the narrow streets of Downalong, now well known for artist’s studios and galleries.
The St Ives Society is famous for its members, who were the traditional artists of their day from the 1920s to the 1940s, with the introduction of the modernists who arrived during WW2, including Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth.
It is now the place to find contemporary figurative and abstract art by professional artists. Paintings, fine art prints, ceramics, sculptures, cards and unframed work are on permanent display.
In the Mariners Gallery there are exhibitions of Member’s work, invited artists and two Open Shows. During the September Festival there is the ever popular £50 Square Deal Show, as well as workshops, concerts and other events.
The Crypt Gallery hosts changing shows from individuals and artists’ groups throughout the year.
